Academic Scholars: How Your Language Affects Your World View

Friday 6 December 2024

LUCIE B, YEAR 12

On Friday 29 November the Academic Scholars attended a though- provoking presentation by Mrs New on ‘How the language you speak affects the way you see the world’.

This presentation was an example of our new programme that will involve the scholars giving their own presentations to the rest of the group, followed by a short Q&A.

Mrs New’s talk began with an introduction to contact languages such as ‘Tok Pisin’ from Papua New Guinea and a discussion of concepts from other countries that English has no word for, such as ‘schadenfreude’ in German, which means the emotional experience of pleasure in response to another's misfortune.

Finally we learnt about how children in other countries learn directions differently, and the effect this has on their navigational skills.

We are looking forward to seeing the rest of the presentations in the New Year
