A-Level Geographers at the 2024 Tectonic Hazards Student Conference

Saturday 7 December 2024

ELAINE BARNARD, TEACHER OF GEOGRAPHY

The 2024 Tectonic Hazards Student Conference in London is an annual event that brings together students from around the world to learn about the latest research and developments in the field of tectonic hazards.

The conference covered a wide range of workshops, including: Tectonic fundamentals, Tsunami: The deadliest tectonic hazard?, and Living with lava: Exploring Iceland’s recent volcanic activity.

We also listened to an inspiring talk from Dr Jess Johnson, a geophysicist recently back from Hawaii and New Zealand where she has been researching how different earthquake characteristics can tell us more about the volcanic activity in the area.

The Tectonic Hazards Student Conference was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the latest research in the field, network with other students and experts, and gain a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding tectonic hazards. The day finished with a summary of how our tectonics knowledge and understanding can be used in the A-Level geography examinations.
