On Thursday 9 January, Sixth Form Spanish students had the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar during an inspiring study day at the British Film Institute (BFI). This enriching experience was conducted entirely in Spanish, challenging students to enhance their listening and analytical skills while deepening their cultural understanding.

The conference delved into the recurring themes that define Almodóvar’s films, including Spanishness, the portrayal of empowered women, the symbolism of food, and the omnipresence of death. Guided by expert speakers, students explored how these motifs contribute to the richness of Almodóvar’s storytelling and his distinct cinematic style.

A highlight of the day was a detailed scene-by-scene analysis, providing insights into Almodóvar’s use of colour, framing, and camera techniques to convey emotion and meaning. This analysis offered students a new perspective on the auteur’s artistic choices and how they create a personal and memorable visual language.

The experience culminated with a screening of Volver on the big screen. Seeing the film in a cinematic setting brought Almodóvar’s vivid colour palette to life, allowing students to fully appreciate its striking visual impact. The combination of expert commentary and the immersive screening experience gave students a deeper appreciation of the film’s complex narrative and visual artistry.

The students returned from the trip inspired and equipped with fresh insights into Spanish cinema and culture. This educational outing not only enhanced their understanding of Almodóvar’s work but also strengthened their ability to critically engage with films in the target language — a memorable and valuable experience for all.
