Junior Academic Scholars: Beliefs, Identity and Women’s Football
Monday 27 January 2025
IZZY M, YEAR 9
This week in the Junior Academic Scholarship meeting we listened to three presentations delivered by Year 12 students, each of which covered a different topic.
The first one was titled ‘Beliefs in Media’, in which Ash K talked about how religious opinions are sometimes portrayed through books by authors with different religious opinions. These can be interpreted in very different ways by people who support or practise other religions to the ones supported in particular books.
The next presentation was presented by Mahi K, with the title ‘Digital Identities’. She spoke about casting a mirror image of yourself onto the internet with every feature exactly the same as you in the real world. Mahi then asked us the question: ‘To what extent is a digital copy of yourself the real you?’
Lastly, we listened to Kirat G speak about ‘The Evolution of Women’s Football’. She covered how women’s football has massively grown from what it was when it began in 1881. From a ban put in place in 1921, and not lifted until 1971, women have fought for their right to play football. It now has a solid foundation at grassroots level and is thriving, especially since the England women won the Euros in 2022. However, there is still a long way to go, especially implementing equal pay across the sport.
To conclude we discussed the topics and asked questions as a group.
