The Best is Yet to Be… Sixth Form Taster Days for Year 11 Students

Friday 31 January 2025

On Thursday 23 and Friday 25 January, Year 11 students had the chance to experience everything that Queenwood’s Sixth Form has to offer, with a programme of lessons and activities entitled ‘The Best Is Yet to Be’.

As well as sampling the A-Level subjects on offer – including Politics, Psychology, Media, Business, Economics and Photography, all new in Year 12 – they spent time in Bellman, where Jackie’s Coffee Shop did a roaring trade, and gathered for a social and optional sleepover in Trew.

One of their tasks over the two days was to produce a video showcasing aspects of Sixth Form life, featuring interviews with staff and students. The winning entry was ‘Purple Planet’, a hilarious parody of David Attenborough’s nature documentaries!

One of the most interesting and exciting prospects about A-Levels is knowing that everything is different. The new responsibilities and freedom that we got to experience in the sixth form taster day showed just a glimpse into what the next two years will look like. My first lesson for an example was physics, the class sizes were far smaller and the content expanded into more detail of what we had already learned at GCSE level and it really helped me to understand how much closer we are to getting to our goals in life, and choosing our career paths. From the great facilities in the sixth form center to being able to experience the lessons and going straight to the front of the lunch queue, I really enjoyed the experience.

I really enjoyed our Sixth Form taster lessons this week. It was so helpful being able to properly experience the different A-Levels and fully immerse ourselves into Sixth Form. One of my taster lessons I chose was Psychology - Our teacher showed us a little insight into all the different topics we will do in Psychology and we did a very interesting experiment to show how easily the mind can be tricked. I am now confident that I will chose Psychology for A-Level at Queenswood. Thank you to all of the teachers who took the time to give us these taster lessons!

Year 11s also had the chance to explore unfamiliar subjects like Politics over the course of two days. In Politics we discussed the differences between UK law and US law through how the sentencing of Axel Rudakubana would differ between Missouri and England. We developed our current knowledge and explored laws and the constitution to form new understandings on law and justice. This gave us an insight into how a standard politics lesson will be taught while also increasing our knowledge on current affairs and culture.

Among the two days of exciting Sixth Form experience, Miss Yaffe - Trew Housemistress - organised a fantastic evening on Thursday Night, to give us some perspective of boarding in the Sixth Form, where there were games, dancing, karaoke, mocktails, and pizza! Our current Sixth Formers made us delicious strawberry mocktails, which were absolutely appreciated, before our amazing catering team provided us with chicken nuggets, pizza and then we finished with ice cream at the end! A lot of Year 11 and Year 10’s had a chance to sing karaoke, and dance with a few Year 12 boarders, which I hear was exceedingly convivial, although my friends and I had already gone to bed, making use of the allowance that sixth formers do not need to hand in any of their devices. In all, the evening was very enjoyable, and I can say that many of my friends who are not currently boarding, have decided that they would enjoy the privileges boarding comes with next year, and all of our current boarders appreciated the treat after our mocks! Thank you to Miss Yaffe for preparing such a great evening.
