CHARLOTTE C AND ZOE U, YEAR 12

It is always fun to try something new. Have you always wanted to do something that you normally wouldn’t think of? Learn new things that will probably amaze you? Entertain yourself with surprises every week in just a short amount of time?

If you feel like this is your cup of tea, you should probably come to our science club. It is on every Thursday at lunchtime 1:45 (Physics 2 classroom), and it is always open to every year group. Bring your friends along, and you can have short but fun interactions that will brighten up your week. So far, we have made DIY lava lamps and had a really fun session with Dr Boyce on plasma ball and the Van de Graaff generator.

DIY lava lamps

These fun and interactive projects can be brought home – and you can even make them in your own spare time! You only need a bottle that is about to be recycled, some cooking oil, some water and food colouring so you get coloured water and some fizzy tablets (magnesium). We first added one quarter of water into the bottle and a few drops of food colouring of choice, then we added cooking oil to the near brim of the bottle, best with a funnel. You can then add your fizzy tablets in and you will be impressed by what you see. See? It’s this simple! We select a range of experiments that are special and unique for each one of our sessions, and even if you are unable to come we can post the recipes and the things we do in our classroom (classroom code: g74u3fb) so you can join in on the fun.

Plasma balls and the Van de Graaff generator

What a shocking experience to have (pun intended). Ever wondered how you feel before you get struck by lightning? You can get this tingling sensation when you put your hands on the Van de Graaff generator. You can see your hair stand up like crazy - because of the electric charge flowing through your arms and body.

There is so much more to say and explore, but it will be for you to dive deeper, and maybe we will see you at our science experiments club on Thursday lunchtime at 1:45 one day 🙂
