Academic Scholars: Human Dominance and the Tamil Language

Thursday 27 February 2025

ISSY N, YEAR 11

The Academic Scholar meeting on Friday 14 February was one filled with more informative and interesting talks, from Sahi K and Arabella L, who are both finalists for the John Fry Public Speaking Competition in March.

Arabella went first, and spoke confidently on why humans are the most dominant species. In her talk, she discussed human rights, and how we are the only species to live in a ‘dual reality’, along with some of the adaptations of humans (such as cooking and mass cooperation) which have helped us prevail as a species.

Sahi then gave a very impressive two-minute talk on Tamil, the oldest language in the world, in which she is a fluent speaker. In this impressive talk, she discussed the structure of the language, as well as the idioms which make it so rich in identity and culture.

Both talks were highly interesting, and it was clear that both Arabella and Sahi have a deep passion for their subject of choice.
