The John Fry Public Speaking Competition 2025

Thursday 6 March 2025

The John Fry Public Speaking Competition is always a highlight of the academic year, involving pupils from across the entire school in displays of oratorical excellence.

This year’s contest was more popular than ever, with over 40 students in Years 10–12 entering the preliminary rounds of the Senior competition, and every pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 competing in the Junior competition.

Our five finalists were tasked with composing a five-minute speech themed around one of the Queenswood Qualities or Values (assigned randomly). After several weeks of practising and perfecting, they delivered their speeches in front of a packed audience of pupils, staff and parents in the Clarissa Farr Theatre on Wednesday 5 March.

They also faced questions from the floor from our adjudicator – Tamyah Jones (OQ), a former winner of the competition. After graduating with a first-class degree in History and Politics at Queen Mary’s, University of London, Tamyah went on to gain a commendation in her graduate diploma in Law at City St George’s, and is currently training to be a barrister. In short, she is a highly accomplished and experienced public speaker, and she was able to offer invaluably insightful advice to the speakers in her closing remarks.

It was an extremely tough decision for Tamyah, but in the end the trophy was awarded to Evie M (Year 11).

Many congratulations to Evie and to her fellow finalists – Sahi K (Year 10), Issy N (Year 11), Bella L and Emily S (Year 12).

We also heard from the three winners of the Junior competition, which took place in English lessons earlier this term. Thank you to Lilia C (Year 7), Ophelia P B (Year 8) and Layla S (Year 9) for three very thought-provoking speeches.
