International Women’s Day: Celebrating with the Mary Wollstonecraft Society

Friday 7 March 2025

ELISKA B, YEAR 12

This year’s International Women’s Day was marked at Queenswood with a week of truly inspiring lunchtime events, filled with appreciation, empowerment, and meaningful discussions.

Students had the chance to send thank-you messages to any female in the school community – whether it was a teacher, student, or staff member – acknowledging their impact and contributions.

One of the highlights was the quiz on influential women throughout history. It wasn’t just a fun challenge, but also a great opportunity to learn about remarkable female figures. Plus, winners had a chance to win a fascinating book on feminism and women’s achievements.
In addition, a suggestion box was set up, allowing students to share their ideas for improving the school. This gave everyone a voice and a chance to contribute to making real changes.

Overall, it was a great way to celebrate the achievements of women, encourage discussion, and promote equality in our school community.

LILY S AND TIFFANY Z, YEAR 7

The Mary Wollstonecraft Society is Queenswood’s club for pupils who want to explore issues such as woman rights, political and social change, inspirational women in history, and what they have done for the country and the world. They meet every Thursday at lunchtime in S1.

Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. Great feminist books include Suffragette Manifestos, An Introduction to Feminism, Forgotten Fairy Tales of Brave and Brilliant Girls, Elise and Mairi Go to War, What Are Little Girls Made Of? and finally, Bloody Brilliant Women.
