Queenswood Children’s Poetry Competition
Friday 24 June 2022
The Queenswood Library was on fire with animated creativity on Tuesday as we hosted our annual Children's Poetry Competition with special guest - performance poet Professor Pango Mango.
Pupils from Goodwyn School, Stormont, Sarum Hall, Maltman's Green, Little Heath and Norfolk House enjoyed a captivating poetry workshop with the Professor and then took turns to perform their own poems - all inspired by the engaging theme of 'celebration'.
The overall winner of the competition was Lilja (Year 5), representing Norfolk House School. Her beautifully emotive poem was chosen by the teachers from Queenswood's English department and you can read it below.
Celebration by Lilja A
It’s time to celebrate new life
A new life has just been born
A baby in its mothers arms sleeping soundly
The father still planning the amazing baby shower
Uncle and Aunt wrapping fabulous presents
Cousins waiting silently in the other room to see their new born cousin
Lots of family members calling from all over the world
Congratulating them on the adorable new born baby
The mother said in a quiet voice
“What shall we name her?”
Rose. I think Rose after your grandmother
I think that’s a beautiful name.
Congratulations to all of the young people who took part in the competition and we look forward to welcoming Professor Pango Mango next year for more perspicacious poetry. We also extend our thanks to Q Librarians Mrs Truran and Ms Gaffney for organising this delightful event.
