ARTIST ALMA THOMAS – EXPLORING ARTWORK AND RESPONDING
Alma Thomas became an important role model for women, African Americans, and older artists. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art, and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times.
As an Afro-American artist, Alma Thomas had to feel the consequences of racism throughout her life. As such, the nature of her homeland also remained an inspiration to her until her death in 1978. Nature was her most popular motif, as can be quickly seen from the titles of Thomas' paintings.
Your task is to research artwork by Alma Thomas, and to create a painting, collage or mosaic of your own.
Create a painting using patterns with bright colours using vertical dashes or concentric circles on paper. You could also use torn paper strips to make a collage with concentric circles or stripes of colourful patterns. Alternatively, use her paintings as inspiration when creating a mosaic of tiles, paper scraps, foam shapes, buttons or all of the above.
Bring your artwork to school after half term, but please also join the Google classroom and post a photo of your artwork using the link below.
