The Enchanted April
by Elizabeth von Arnim (adult)
The perfect antidote to our troubled times. A gentle tale of four women finding hope and friendship. Leaving aside their previous lives they find the perfect place full of sunshine and flowers. A witty, joyful read to lift the spirits. This is Q Readers' book this term. Revisiting this has been an absolute joy!
The Black Flamingo
by Dean Atta (teen: Year 9 and above)
The Black Flamingo is a veritable feast of beautifully drawn, believable characters and their intersectionality, all embarking on their own voyage of self-discovery. The verse style offers an economical and energetic journey through the various themes of identity, diversity, belonging and the freedom to be yourself. Carnegie Shortlist 2020
Mrs Truran absolutely loved this book and has been giving it to all her colleagues to read! It flows beautifully.
Lampie
by Annet Shaap (Years 7 and 8)
Every evening Lampie the lighthouse keeper’s daughter must light a lantern to warn ships away from the rocks. But one stormy night disaster strikes. The light goes out, a ship is wrecked, and adventure begins. In disgrace Lampie is sent to work as a maid at the Admiral’s Black House, where rumour has it that a monster lurks in the tower. But what she finds there is stranger and more beautiful than any monster. Carnegie Longlist 2020
This is a wonderful read full of adventure and fun with a strong moral tale. Mrs Truran really enjoyed the thrills and spills!
