One Year On: Queenswood Reflects
Friday 26 March 2021
It has been one year since the World Health Organisation declared Covid-19 a global pandemic and it has been a year like no other in our lifetimes. Life has changed dramatically for us all. At times, we have all struggled to cope with the loss of normalcy and connection with friends and families; pupils may have worried about their learning, and for those sitting exams - how final grades would be assessed.
Some members of our community have tragically lost loved ones or shared the grief of their friends. Yet during this challenging time we have also seen uplifting examples of selflessness and determination. Across our nation, we have witnessed the heroic efforts of NHS staff, key workers and inspirational fundraisers and our hearts have been warmed by stories of kindness and service to others.
On the National Day of Reflection this week, we paused to look back on the last year and lit candles on the Monstros to show our support for all those in our community who have experienced loss in some form or other. Being reflective is one of our Queenswood qualities and an important tool for our students. Not only does it allow us to learn from our mistakes and gain perspective about situations we may be experiencing, but it also contributes to our happiness. It’s important to look back on our successes, however small, and celebrate the good things in our lives.
We have seen many good things at School over the past year! Our Senior Leadership Team, teaching and support staff, worked tirelessly to deliver both exemplary on-site and remote learning provision and our pupils engaged enthusiastically in their lessons, even when to do so was tiring or complicated by IT difficulties. Led by Mrs Tillotson and Ms Yaffe, staff made essential PPE for those caring for the most vulnerable in our community - all funded by the overwhelmingly generous donations from parents, staff and pupils. Girls in exam years showed unflagging resilience as public exams were cancelled and uncertainty prevailed, going on to achieve incredible results. Our Catering team moved mountains (and venues!) to make the Queenswood dining experience as near to normal as possible for the pupils and organised fun themed events to celebrate Nigerian Independence Day, Halloween, Christmas and Diwali. Resident staff kept each other’s spirits high with zoom calls, shared supermarket deliveries and even window-sill tennis!
A time of reflection this week has allowed us to comfort each other but also to remember that during a difficult time, our community has pulled together and is stronger than ever. We can be proud of our achievements and look forward with optimism.
Here are some of the moments that made the last year so memorable.
