A great start to Queenswood’s Athletics season

Friday 28 April 2017

The 2017 Athletics season is off to a promising start for Queenswood. In the Easter Holidays a small team of U17s (led by captain Chloe Munro) took part in the Hertfordshire County Indoor Championships at Lea Valley.

With some of the team away on school trips, the girls had to work hard. It was a great event: even though many of the team had not competed indoors before, Lara Sikka ran a great 800m coming second and Shaka Egbo was a convincing High Jump champion and also broke the County Indoor High Jump record. Shaka is now the holder of both the Indoor and Outdoor records – an amazing achievement. The team was placed 4th overall, just one point behind the joint 2nd and 3rd placed teams – a great competition!

On Wednesday 26 April we took a small team to the District U18 championships. With many girls dropping out due to pressures of exams, defending our title was going to prove to be difficult. However, captain Jess Hurley, supported by her team mates, were delighted to finish as runners-up.

Jess was crowned county triple jump champion and was runner-up in the 400m, Sophie Dutton was 3rd in the shot, Lara Sikka 2nd in 1500m and Long Jump, Gaby M-P 3rd in 800m and champion in Javelin , Megan Patterson 2nd in High Jump and Marina Baldwin 3rd in Discus and 200m. In the final event the relay the team ran a great race, coming 2nd.
