A Standing Ovation for Kalli and the NYO at the Barbican

Thursday 16 January 2025

MISS CULORA, YEAR 11 TUTOR

We are thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Kalli Z, a talented Year 11 cellist, who has been touring across the UK as a member of the prestigious National Youth Orchestra. Kalli recently graced the stage at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall, captivating the audience with her performance of three extraordinary orchestral pieces conducted by Jaime Martín.

The programme opened with Ravel’s mesmerising ‘Boléro’, a masterpiece of orchestration. This was followed by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s ‘Catamorphosis’, an evocative sonic journey through nature. In the second half, the audience was treated to Carl Nielsen’s dramatic and grand Symphony No. 4 – a daring and inspired work.

The concerts were hugely successful – the Barbican performance was sold out and received a standing ovation and a four-star review in the Guardian, while the Nottingham performance was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and was very favourably reviewed by the Times (paywall).

On behalf of the entire Queenswood community – students and staff alike – we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Kalli on this incredible achievement. We are so proud of you!
