Aberdare Cup: An Historic All-Queenswood Final

Monday 8 July 2024

We are immensely proud to announce our triumph in the Aberdare Cup, the U18 National Schools Tennis Championships, for the second consecutive year, marking the 29th time we have secured this prestigious title. This year's victory is particularly historic as Queenswood becomes the first school ever to have both its A and B teams in the final, showcasing the extraordinary talent and dedication of our Tennis Scholar squad.

The Aberdare Cup win highlights the remarkable strength and depth within our tennis programme. Our youngest player, a Year 8 student, demonstrated exceptional skill and maturity, contributing to this collective success.

This victory is not just a standalone achievement. For most of our team members, it marks their second national final of the year, following their win at the U15 Championships in December. This consistency underscores the rigorous training and exceptional talent within our squad.

To reach the final, our teams faced and triumphed over some of the top schools in the country, including Repton, Millfield, Culford, Eastbourne College, Kings High, and Strathallan. These victories are a testament to the hard work, resilience, and competitive spirit of our players and coaches.

“I am immensely proud of this team,” said Director of Tennis Catherine Sluter. “They look forward to Aberdare Cup every year and the trophy means so much to the players – and of course to myself. Their grit and determination to do the best they can in this event has seen great results in the last couple of years. Their team spirit across several different year groups highlights how strong they are as a unit. These players have plenty more to look forward to in the coming months, not least the World School Tennis Finals in Bahrain in October 2024, where we will be representing England.”
