Alice Baker OQ: Graduate Entry Medicine at Oxford University
Wednesday 20 April 2022
Having recently graduated with a first class degree and a faculty medal from University College London, Alice Baker OQ is about to embark on a four-year post-graduate course in Medicine at Oxford University.
After leaving Queenswood in 2018, I moved to London to study Biomedical Sciences at University College London. Although I absolutely loved the course and the research opportunities that came with it, I often wondered how the information I was learning applied to clinical practice.
During the months I spent volunteering at UCLH, I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in academic medicine – combining my interests in medical research and patient care. Last year, I graduated with a first-class degree and the UCL Faculty of Life Sciences Medal, and I am delighted to have subsequently received graduate-entry medicine offers from both the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford (the latter of which I have chosen to accept).
Without the unwavering support of the academic and pastoral staff at Queenswood, I really doubt that I would be in the position I am in today. Every teacher went above and beyond to make the learning environment at Q fun – giving me confidence in my ability to work in STEM. I took A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, and Geography, and did an EPQ on the topic of antimicrobial resistance.
Despite having a relatively full timetable, I took part in a number of extracurricular activities, and I would encourage any current pupils (especially those considering medicine) to do the same. The staff at Queenswood have such diverse expertise, and I wish that I could go back in time to try more of the amazing things on offer!
