Brenda Bly – Queenswood’s Lower School in hilarious musical whodunit

Thursday 25 May 2017

Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 staged a vibrant, stylish and extremely funny production of Brenda Bly: Teen Detective in May. The musical was set in a private girls’ school in 1950s America. When a series of unfortunate backstage accidents threatened to derail the school play, Rocket Girl, it was up to Brenda to save the day and crack the Scooby-Doo-style mystery.

Aminat Mohammed was superb as the glamorous, intrepid investigator, while Megan Langley gave a hilarious – and beautifully sung – performance as her heroic partner, Buddy. Talia Neal played the cowardly Stu with splendid gawkiness, pursued relentlessly by the sweetly determined Jo-Jo (Ella Higgens).

Felicity Holmes as Autumn, the pompous director of the school play, Lottie Lunn as Darcy, her concussed leading lady, Paris Petrou and Maddy Dean as the bickering child stars Bridget and Gidget, and Emma Meyer as the long-suffering Candy, all gave wonderfully feisty performances. Hannah Vischer displayed an outstanding talent for accents, playing the villainous Russian spy Oxanna who disguises herself as a French exchange student.

Sahara Bailey-Joseph as Miss van Strander, the wildly aggressive headmistress, and Lexi Mackay as Cecil, the incompetent caretaker, made a hysterically funny double act. And special mention must go to Annie Williams, who delivered a show-stopping vocal performance as Nurse Wilder.

With a cast of 90, this was one of the biggest shows Queenswood has produced in recent years, and we would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved on stage and behind the scenes.
