Calling A-Level Physicists: Summer Opportunities

Friday 19 May 2023

The following courses, promoted by the British Physics Olympiad, will be of interest to all Year 12 pupils studying Physics.

Quantum in Pictures!

(online, led by Oxford Computer Science)

When: Mon 5 June – Sun 13 August 2023

Audience: sixth-form students in the UK aged 16 and up

About the event: This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn about the quantum world...in pictures! By taking this free course taught by researchers from the University of Oxford and Quantinuum, you can be part of an innovative movement in science challenging the viewpoint that ‘quantum theory cannot be taught before the undergraduate level’.  Upon completing the course, you get a certificate and a free, signed, limited-edition copy of the book ‘Quantum in Pictures’.

Booking and more information: Free event. For more information, see the flyer and register here for Quantum in Pictures.

Y12 Physics Summer School and Y12 NQCC Quantum Experience Summer School

(in person)

Date: Mon 31 July – Fri 4 Aug 2023

Venue: Department of Physics

Audience: Students should be local (Oxfordshire, Berkshire of Buckinghamshire), aged 16+ years and in Year 12, and studying Physics and Maths A-level or equivalent.

About the event: This year we are running two programmes that give local A-level (or equivalent) students a taster of life in a physics department. During the week students work on a project and also take part in a central programme of activities such as departmental tours, career talks and sample lectures. The summer schools are run in place of work experience for local students. New for 2023, we are running the Y12 NQCC Quantum Experience Summer School which will include quantum physics tutorials, some coding experience, and visits to local companies who are working on quantum technology. You will meet researchers who are working in this cutting edge field and other likeminded students. The Year 12 Quantum Experience Summer School has been made possible by generous support from the NQCC (The National Quantum Computing Centre).
