Decidedly “With It” – Queenswood in 1968
Friday 13 October 2023
As part of their introduction to Representation Theorists such as Stuart Hall, Liesbet van Zoonen and David Gauntlett, Year 12 Media Students have been looking through the Queenswood’s archives at some of the school’s historical promotional material.
They were particularly fascinated by this feature, published in Hertfordshire Focus magazine in September 1968.
Miss Essame was entering her 24th year as Headmistress, and innovations such as language labs, driving lessons, judo and fencing had recently been introduced. The school is described in glowing terms as ‘self-sufficient, decidedly “with it”, glorying in the future rather than the past’, and the girls as ‘poised, self-reliant, happy’.
