Esperanza Wins World U18 Doubles Title
Monday 2 February 2015
Queenswood is thrilled to announce that Esperanza Merry (Year 9) has enjoyed yet more stellar success in Wheelchair Tennis.
At the turn of the year, aged just fourteen, she became the World Number 2 seed in the U18 age category. Now she has excelled at the Les Petits As tournament in Tarbes, France, winning the WorldJunior (Under 18) Masters Doubles
title with her Russian partner, and finishing as runner-up in the Singles, losing to the Number 1 seed in a very close final.
Les Petits As is the world’s premier event for junior Wheelchair Tennis players.
Esperanza has had a phenomenal year. As well as cementing her position as the world’s number two under-18 junior player,
she played her way into the senior top 50
after her first senior LTA singles title win at the Wrexham Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in 2014, at the age of just 13. She was named Newcomer of the Year at the British Wheelchair Tennis Awards.
Esperanza’s goal is to represent her country at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, and she is determined to win as many major matches as she can to ensure herself a Great Britain spot.
As well as being a full-time boarder at Queenswood, she is a resident of Plymouth, and has been nominated for the Plymouth Herald’s Sports Personality of the Year Award. The winners will be announced on Monday 2 February.
We are immensely proud of Esperanza’s achievements, and wish her every success in the coming months.
