Eva H: Building Verulamium in Minecraft
Friday 6 September 2024
Eva H (Year 12) has been busy putting her Minecraft modelling skills to highly effective use. She has created the first ever interpretation of a section of the remains of Roman Verulamium in St Albans, which was discovered in 2022/23 by a geophysical survey. Eva’s father is a volunteer with the team who conducted the survey.
Eva, who is embarking on her A-Level Classical Civilisation course, put the above slides together in a few hours to present her interpretation to Dr Tom Lucas, Senior Archeologist at the St Albans Roman Museum. Her model is faithful to the layout of the buildings as revealed by the geophysics. Everything above ground is based on Eva’s research and imagination.
Dr Lucas was extremely impressed. He even invited Eva to be an advisor for a future project looking at using Minecraft to build Verulamium, and has expressed an interest in creating a 3D printed model or an augmented reality exhibit to display at the Verulamium Museum, if funding can be found.
