Film Club Review – ‘The Prestige’
Thursday 15 January 2015
The introduction of Christopher Nolan’s 2006 film The Prestige is in my opinionbeautifully constructed. It is initially full of intrigue, stunning angles and
a gentle narrative voiceover. Perhaps the opening scene is so effective due to
its simplicity, however this high standard can be seen to ebb away as
complexity takes over.
While the film remains mildly interesting – it is a
Christopher Nolan movie after all – the finale is dragged out to such an extent
it became a little tedious. It is noted that a representation of time passing
is needed to show the level of obsession, which is the key theme of The
Prestige, but the result is a little disappointing. On the other hand our
members found particularly intriguing the hint of fantasy. The supernatural
element of The Prestige is perhaps its most fascinating attribute. Moreover,
the undermining of otherworldly powers through simple human dedication is a
thought provoking topic.
As a side note The Prestige is worth watching merely to
glimpse David Bowie’s gorgeous representation of Nikola Tesla. Or is that my
love of everything David Bowie touches shining through?
