Germaine Greer – Feminist Icon at Queenswood

Tuesday 27 January 2015

The world-renowned cultural commentator, literary theorist and feminist pioneer, Professor Germaine Greer, visited Queenswood on Friday 23 January to deliver a profoundly thought-provoking talk on the subject of ‘The Disappearing Woman’.

She offered a series of alarming examples of how the much hoped-for advancements in women’s rights and representations have stalled, citing the rise of religious extremism, the lack of home care provision for elderly NHS patients (a disproportionate number of whom are women), the worrying global phenomenon of disappearing girls, and even the recent controversy surrounding Page 3. Her abiding theme was that women need to constantly assert themselves and defend their rights.

Before the talk, she chatted to a group of Sixth Formers in the Principal’s study, and at the end of the evening she answered a series of challenging questions from the floor.

We are immensely grateful to Professor Greer for giving her time. Look out for details of more high-profile speakers at Queenswood in the near future.
