Newsletter Team Report: What's going on at Robotics Club?

Friday 2 February 2024

Our Newsletter Club's roving reporters visited the Robotics Club on Tuesday to find out what exciting activities were taking place. Led by Mr Laming and Mr Doherty, the club fosters creativity, problem-solving and teamwork, and this term, the students are gaining hands-on experience of Python coding and electronics.

Using a Raspberry Pi kit, members of the Robotics Club are building their own thermal nature cams, which will record still photos or video footage of the wildlife at Queenswood. The students are writing the computer code that will tell the camera to start recording once the heat sensor is activated by a passing animal - fascinating stuff! Our newsletter reporters quickly got to work finding out what the pupils like about the club and we share their responses below. We look forward to bringing you an update when the nature cams go live, and hopefully the students will capture some exciting wildlife footage.

Why do you like Robotics Club?

I find the coding fascinating! I joined because I wanted to experience something new and creative.

Evie S 7W
Being able to see the creation which you have programmed and made. It really makes you feel like you have achieved something.

Anjola O 7H
When I get the coding right!

Annabelle S 8W
I like creating things and solving the coding. When you solve a problem you feel victorious!

With the advancement of the times, AI and robotics has become more and more important in our lives, including its use in smart washing machines, smart ovens, etc. Its presence can even be seen in cutting-edge technology research and development. As students, we may know very little about how robotics work and even what the risks are. So its important we learn about this when we are young. Not only for ourselves, but also for a better future for everyone. The Robotics Club started with this goal in mind and it is improving our understanding of AI and robots from the most basic content.
Raspberry Pi is a simple and free programming system. Students can start by adding components and create their own digital world step-by-step. The Robotics Club provides a free learning environment for students to explore on their own, allowing us to enjoy our curiosity.

Ivanna Volkova 12W
I like attending the club as it allows me to improve my robotics and coding skills through engaging in exciting practical projects, such as constructing and programming a line following robotics car or a wildlife camera. The club provides an amazing opportunity to get the hands-on experience in robotics and explore topics outside of the school curriculum.
