Obituary: Sally Ann Howes OQ, Star of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Sally Ann Howes, who played the iconic Truly Scrumptious in the 1968 film of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, has passed away at the age of 91.
Sally was a pupil at Queenswood in the 1940s, and was a popular child actor on the London stage before and after the Second World War. In the 1950s she moved to the US, making her Broadway debut in 1958 in My Fair Lady.
She starred in a string of movies in the 1960s and 70s, as well as featuring in her own TV specials and dominating the musical theatre stage on both sides of the Atlantic. She was described by the composer Richard Rodgers as ‘the greatest singer who ever sang on the American musical stage’.
