Queenswood Musician of the Year 2015

Queenswood Music Department were honoured to welcome Gill Johnston, Musical Director of the National Children’s Wind Orchestra, to judge the Musician of the Year Competition on Wednesday 13 May.
The field was particularly strong this year, and the 19 girls who reached the finals are to be congratulated on the superb standards of musicianship across all levels of ability.
Gill Johnston announced that in choosing a winner, she was looking for ‘a performance that speaks to me. There are many ingredients that go into a performance – not just playing the right notes!’

Gill Johnston
Gillian studied the bassoon with Archie Camden at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and, after a period of freelance playing, concentrated on a teaching career, before moving to Harpenden where she established her own Music School, ‘Harpenden Musicale’. As well as running the Music School, Gill arranges Musicale holidays, competitions and a summer music festival. She is the founder and Musical Director of the National Children’s Wind Orchestra and associated groups. Gill very much enjoys contact with young musicians, inspiring and enthusing their interest in music.
