Queenswood Physicists Shortlisted for National Engineering Competition

Tuesday 30 January 2018

Three of Queenswood’s most lateral-thinking scientists – Ginnie Akkaneevanich, Gigi Leung and Cynthia Yu – have been shortlisted for Talent 2030, the extremely prestigious National Engineering Competition for Girls.

‘The aim of our project is trying to solve a problem of the 21st century, which is getting access to clean water. We have noticed that clean water is essential to human health, but is mostly contaminated by the presence of factories that are releasing toxic substances into the water system. They poison the fish and even wipe out some of the marine life. These chemical compounds can be found in the fish that we eat. Even though they do not affect us directly, they are reducing the effectiveness of the critical defence systems in our bodies.Faced with these challenges, we have come up with the idea of building a factory to purify the chemicals and microorganisms out of the water system.’

Ginnie, Gigi and Cynthia will travel to the Big Bang Fair at the NEC, Birmingham on 17 March 2017, where they will exhibit their project in the Talent 2030 final.

They have created a website detailing both the technical aspects of the project and a business model – visit https://akkaneevanichg.wixsite.com/thepurifyingfactory for more information.
