The Upper Sixth Drama students staged a devised musical theatre tour de force on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 March. ‘The Musical About Musicals And The Concept Of What It Means To Be A Musical…The Musical’ was the snappy title for this romp through the clichés and conventions of the genre.
Having initially intended to devise a piece about the Dark Side of Technology, they discovered in rehearsal that they could not suppress their love of Musical Theatre. They decided to put together a gloriously meta-theatrical extravaganza, exploring the key features of musical theatre, while referencing over 50 well-loved shows, in just 30 minutes.
The show was expertly directed by Tasha Rajan, with sumptuous costume design by Gaby Sotiriou and a brilliantly adaptable set design by Elea Soumah. The five-strong cast – Olivia Garwood, Joanna Jacovides, Aoife Morgan Jones, Georgia Mohamed and Lydia Partridge – all gave electrifying performances. A West End transfer can surely only be weeks away!
