Queenswood’s CoCo Shi Wins Astonishing Journalism Opportunity at Media Awards

Monday 27 June 2016

It’s not every day that you get to spend a couple of hours inStationers’ Hall in London, surrounded by people who share an interest in
publishing and journalism.

On June 21, Jessice Chen and I had the privilege of
representing Queenswood and the Artery Team in the 2016 Shine School Media Awards, where the fifth issue of the Artery Magazine—the Food issue—was
nominated for Best Design, Best Environmental Strategy and Best Magazine.

And
how successful we were: not only did the Artery Magazine gain the award of
Highly Commended in the Best Magazine category, but our Chief Editor, CoCo Shi,
won the title of ‘Young Journalist Showing Exceptional Promise’.

CoCo’s piece, ‘A
Japanese Tea Ceremony’, was described by the judges as ‘a sensitively-written
piece’ that lifted our magazine ‘to a different level’, and she has won a
one-to-one Master Class with Simon Heffer, Senior Journalist at the Daily
Telegraph.

While the prize presentation was highly interesting, the more
entertaining aspects were the workshops that were held before the award
ceremony. Mr Kelley, Jessice and I had the most enjoyable time making paper
from pulp and water. We also learnt about the programmes behind 3D printing,
and were fascinated as we watched the 3D printer print out a die right before
our eyes. We had fun in the cartoon drawing workshop as well, where we drew
caricature versions of Winston Churchill with his double chin.

I would like to
end this brief article on our day at Stationers’ Hall by once again
congratulating the Artery Team, and especially CoCo, on their achievements, and
would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Kelley for taking us to such an
extraordinary event.
