Queenswood’s Latest Aberdare Cup Triumph – Next Stop Brazil!

Friday 15 July 2016

Queenswood’stennis stars are celebrating after once again winning the Team Tennis National
Schools Championship, commonly known as the Aberdare Cup. Ema Lazic (17),
Georgie Walker (17), Olivia Peet (16) and Bella Moen (13) now qualify for the
World School Tennis Finals in Brazil in 2017.

The
competition finals were held at Queenswood over three
days in the first week of July. A hard-won victory against Cheam in the
semi-finals set up a repeat of last year’s final against Talbot Heath.
Queenswood won three of the four singles matches, with Georgie Walker (team
captain) playing the match of her life to beat Talbot Heath’s number one
player, 6-2 7-5. Ema Lazic and Olivia Peet’s compelling
doubles win (6-3 6-1) ensured that the Aberdare Cup remains in Queenswood’s
possession for another year.

Queenswood’s
Head of Tennis, Catherine Sluter, was delighted: ‘The girls were great – it was
an amazing achievement. Our B team, featuring Emily Small, Annabel Davis, Charlotte Tatham and Olivia’s sister Alexis, were also
at the finals, and they were a great support.’

The
last time Queenswood qualified for the World School Tennis Finals was in 2013
in Australia, when they were silver medallists.

The
Aberdare Cup victory crowned a tremendous week for Queenswood Tennis. On
Tuesday 5 July, Olivia, Georgie, Bella and Annabel Davis all won in their age
groups at the Independent Schools Doubles Championship at Eton.
