Queenswood’s Netball Teams Make Superb Progress

Thursday 11 December 2014

Netball at Queenswood has taken a big step forward this term, with matches taking place in every year group, and training sessions becoming more frequent.

The strong U12a team are currently the top performing team in the school, recording both league and friendly wins against Stormont (W 15-8), Mount Grace (W 9-0) and Dame Alice Owens (W 12-6). Congratulations to Sahara Bailey-Joseph who was nominated Player of the Match twice, and Mia Greig once. The U12b team put in a good performance against Dame Alice Owens, despite the score not reflecting how close the match was (L 7-2). Player of the Match was Maria Chao.
The U13 team, captained by Gaby M-P, competed at the Highgate Tournament in November. After a slow start, with losses to Surbiton and London City School, the girls found their rhythm and the team secured some solid wins against Ibstock Place School, Harrodians and the Highgate U12 team, to finish in 9th place overall. Players of the Tournament were awarded to Aminat Mohammed and Sahara Bailey-Joseph – particularly impressive as they were playing a year above. The U13b team have been training hard, with technique and movement consistently improving. They played Dame Alice Owens (L 14-7), but look forward to matches next term.

The U14 team, captained by Milly Davies, competed for the first time at the County round of the Schools National Netball Competition held at Stanborough School. The team were in a tough group, losing three consecutive matches to strong opposition, but they never let their heads drop. They managed to secure a 5-5 draw with Haileybury and beat Habs 8-5 in their last game. Players of the Tournament were Tomisin Ibukunle and Shaka Egbo. The U14b team, captained by Millie Parry-Cooper, played a good game against Dame Alice Owens. Queenswood fought back from being 3-0 down in the first quarter to ensure a 7-7 draw.

The U15 team, captained by Catryn Langley, suffered a defeat to Dame Alice Owens U15A team, but for many it was their first ever match. The girls will train together next term and hope to record their first win.

Both the U16 and Senior teams have been going from strength to strength, with their commitment second to none. The U16s, captained by Maddy Davies, performed exceptionally well against Mount Grace to record a 13-10 win. Some solid defence from Adobea Addo-Ashong and Ellegrace Ofosu-Bossman kept the opposition at bay. The senior team, captained by Millie Norton, have been eager to play. They recorded a good win against Yavneh (W 11-6), with excellent shooting from Lucy Baker and Zoe Smith and solid defending from Victoria Fishpool. They also put in a good performance against Dame Alice Owens (L 14-7) and lost out to a strong Mount Grace side (L 19-8).

The Senior Inter-House netball competition was as competitive and fun as ever. The match between Clapham South and Waller was particularly close, with CS winning 14-12. North recorded a resounding win over Waller (21-5), with Hartley beating Clapham South (23-18). Lots of girls took part or came to cheer their houses on. The overall winners were Hartley. Congratulations to all girls involved!

Queenswood staff and students alike look forward to their first ever Netball Tour to Condover Hall next term (March 2015). The 44 girls going on the trip will train hard in preparation for success, in the hope that a Netball Tour will remain an annual event.
