Sixth Formers in Washington DC – Politics in Action
Friday 3 May 2019
In April 2019, a Sixth Form visit was arranged to Washington DC. The purpose of the trip was to help students studying American Government & Politics, and historians studying 20th century American History, to understand the political power and history of Washington DC.
The first day opened with a guided walking tour of Washington. The girls were able to see the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, and the Civil Rights Memorial at a beautiful time when the cherry blossoms were at their best. Dr Takamine of Tokyo donated money for the planting of the Cherry trees back in 1912. This was a gift of friendship to the people of the United States from the people of Japan.
A whirlwind pace was set, and the girls managed to visit Congress, including the House of Representatives, and the White House Centre. They also managed to squeeze in a tour of the Pentagon, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, Arlington Cemetery and finally a much appreciated - albeit brief - shopping trip to George Town.
