The 33 Musketeers – a modern-day miracle

Wednesday 12 February 2014

Upper Sixth Theatre Students presented an astonishing piece of self-devised drama in the Helen McCrory Studio on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 February.

The 33 Musketeers told the incredible tale of the Chilean miners whose miraculous underground survival for 69 days, and subsequent rescue, captivated the global media in 2010.

A series of episodic scenes – many based on verbatim accounts from the miners and their relatives – presented every imaginable angle of the story. The terror of the initial mine collapse (depicted through elegant physical theatre), the hopeless camaraderie of the miners as they awaited certain death, the comic bravado of the drilling experts, Elvis-inspired hallucinations, the sensational first contact with the outside world, the miners’ growing sense of their own celebrity – all these and many more were packed into 35 utterly compelling minutes of live theatre.
