Weekend Fun – Football’s Coming Home!

Thursday 10 June 2021

There is only one type of fun to be had this weekend - football! As parents dust off their Euro 96 shirts and the humming of Baddiel and Skinner's anthem grows ever louder, we give you our guide to Euro 2020/21.

How does it work?

The competition is made up of 24 teams in six groups of four. At the first stage of the competition each team plays the other three in their group. The two teams with the most points in each group automatically go through to the next round and the teams in fourth place are knocked out. The four highest performing teams finishing in third place in their groups will also make it into the next round, which is round of 16. Next, the 16 teams play eight matches, in which the losing teams are knocked out of the competition. The remaining eight then enter the quarter-finals. The four winning teams then progress to the semi-finals, which, as before, knock out the losing teams, leaving only two remaining for the grand final.

The Groups

As part of Group D, England have some tough competition including Croatia who we play on Sunday. Group F will draw some serious attention with France, Germany and Portugal all in the 'group of death'.

Q Pundit Miss Bassett

As Head of Football at Queenswood, Miss Bassett is the only pundit we are giving any air time to! Here she shares all you need to know to be on top of your game!

"With the Euros kicking off on Friday 11th June, there is a lot of excitement brewing amongst football and sport fans alike. England start their campaign on Sunday 13th June at 2pm but the hottest match of their group will be against close rivals Scotland on Friday 18th June at 8pm.

Football at Queenswood has continued to grow year on year and the ‘QBallers’ as they are known, have been enjoying some fixtures since restrictions were eased earlier this term. The U14A had a good win against Chigwell School & the U13A competed at the ISFA Regional Finals back in May, just missing out on the finals. For Girls Football Week 24th-28th May, every year group took part in Inter-House Football competitions which were thoroughly enjoyed by all."
