Weekend Fun: Picnic in the Park

Thursday 22 April 2021

Now that we can meet in groups of up to six outside and the sun is shining, why not enjoy a picnic this weekend with friends or family. Here are some ideas for a picnic in the park - just watch out for the teddy bears!

Perfect Picnic Places

Verulamium Park in Saint Albans has 100-acres of beautiful parkland, perfect for picnics! It is also just a short walk from the town centre where you can stock up on traditional picnic goodies or even pick up a take away. At weekends, there is a vibrant market selling hot and cold street food and many of the town's restaurants are taking online orders for collection.

Just 5 minutes drive from Queenswood, the parkland and gardens at Hatfield House are now open for the picnic season. Within the park there are three woodland walks of varying lengths to enjoy and dogs are welcome too. Taking about 90 minutes, the longest walk is 3 miles long and you may be lucky enough to see the park's deer or newly born lambs along the way.

When it's time for lunch, you can enjoy the picnic you brought from home or alternatively, the Coach House Kitchen is serving hot and cold meals, which you can enjoy in their outside seating area or within the park. To visit the park book tickets here.

If you are based in London or looking to travel slightly further afield, the Royal Parks offer an oasis of tranquility within the bustling metropolis. For a more upmarket picnic, Le Deli Robuchon conveniently situated next to Green Park, one of central London's key picnic spots, will provide you with a wide range of picnic options. You can choose individual items, bespoke boxes and hampers from their delicatessen; there is even an afternoon tea option with tea sandwiches, macaroons and scones. Order by Deliveroo and your picnic can even be delivered to you in the park!

Takeaway food is convenient, but if you are a keen chef and would like to prepare your own perfect picnic, you can find some great ideas here. Mrs Lee - Head of Practical Cookery at Queenswood has also shared her delicious recipe for Picnic Mini Scotch Eggs.
