In the first week of the October half term, Sra Law, Srta Giménez and girls from Year 11, Lower and Upper Sixth travelled to Sanlucar de Barrameda, a small, peaceful and tranquil town half an hour from Jerez, in the south of Spain. Sanlucar is the perfect place to sample typical dishes, experience traditional life, and meander the streets full of people breakfasting al fresco.

On Sunday, at three in the morning, we found ourselves at the airport, sleepy and nervous, but looking forward to starting our adventure. As we arrived in Jerez, Lola was waiting to take us to the town where we would spend the next five days. The hotel was very modern and Manolo was always on hand to help us and to make our stay as pleasant as possible. On Sunday afternoon we went to the beach, which was very relaxing and great fun. While some of the girls played football, others spoke Spanish, and we all tried to absorb a little Vitamin D to recharge our batteries.

La primera semana de las vacaciones de octubre Sra Law, Srta Giménez y las chicas de Year 11, Lower y Upper Sixth fueron a Sanlucar de Barrameda. Es un pueblecito a media hora de Jerez, en el sur de España, donde reina la simpatía y la tranquilidad. Allí también se pueden saborear los platos típicos, las tradiciones y las calles llenas de gente desayunando en las terrazas.

El domingo a las tres de la mañana nos disponíamos a ir al aeropuerto, con sueño y nervios, pero con ganas de empezar esta aventura. Una vez llegamos a Jerez, Lola nos esperaba para llevarnos al pueblo donde estaríamos cinco días. El hotel era muy moderno y Manolo siempre estaba dispuesto a ayudarnos y a hacernos la estancia de lo más agradable. La tarde del domingo fuimos a la playa, fue muy divertido y relajante. Mientras unas jugaban con la pelota, otras hablaban en español y todas intentamos absorver un poco de Vitamina D para cargar las pilas. 

Our programme began on Monday: work experience in the mornings and Spanish classes with Lola and Elena in the afternoons. There was a delicious continental breakfast each morning at 9am, prepared for us by Manolo. After breakfast, some girls went to the San Lucas Institute, and the rest to Las Pastoras private school. In both institutions, the girls observed classes, and took notes in History, Spanish, Geography, RS, etc – all in Spanish! They also helped the teachers of English, and even had to give oral presentations in Spanish, in font of Spanish students. When school finished at one o’clock, the girls gathered at the Plaza Cabildo to meet up with their teachers. We must say that every day the girls arrived extremely happy, grinning and eager to describe the excitements of the morning. From one till three o’clock, the girls had time to explore the town, and find something to eat; they all had the opportunity to order in Spanish and to sample different local dishes. At three o’clock, we all met at the hotel, where we did our study, relaxed, and prepared for the afternoon classes. By five o’clock, we were at Lola’s Language Academy, ready to learn more Spanish and resolve grammatical issues. The subjunctive, ‘por y para’ and ‘ser y estar’ no longer pose a problem! By 8.30 it was time to head to El Cura to see Mario, the funniest waiter in Sanlucar. In the restaurant we all ate together, and had a whale of a time. It was a good opportunity to come together to talk about the day and make plans. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel to shower and sleep.

El lunes empezó nuestro programa: experiencia laboral por la mañana y clases de español con Lola y Elena por la tarde. Manolo siempre nos tenía preparado un desayuno continental muy sabroso a las 9. Después del desayuno unas chicas iban al instituto de San Lucas y el resto al colegio privado Las Pastoras. En los institutos las chicas observaban clases, tomaban apuntes de historia, español, geografía, religion, etc. Y todo en español! También ayudaban a los profesores de inglés y hasta tuvieron que hacer presentaciones orales en español delante de los alumnos españoles. Cuando acababa el colegio a la 1, las chicas venían a la plaza Cabildo para ver a las profesoras. Cabe decir que cada día las chicas venían muy contentas, con sonrisas y ganas de explicar lo emocionante que había sido la manana. De 1 a 3 las chicas tenían tiempo para explorar el pueblo e ir a comer donde quisieran, así todas tuvieron la oportunidad de pedir en español y probar diferentes platos típicos del sur. A las 3 todas nos encontrábamos en el hotel, donde hacíamos deberes, nos relajábamos y nos preparábamos para las clases de la tarde. A las 5 ya estábamos en la Academia de idiomas de Lola para aprender más español y resolver dudas gramaticales. El subjuntivo, por y para y ser y estar ya no son un problema! A las 8.30 era la hora de ir a El Cura y ver a Mario, el camarero más gracioso de Sanlucar. En el restaurante comíamos todas juntas y nos lo pasamos bomba. Era un buen momento para juntarnos y hablar sobre cómo había ido el día y planear el día siguiente. Después volvíamos al hotel, ducha y a dormir.    

The Queenswood girls were like film stars! At the schools, they made many friends, with whom they shared infinite photos and tweets. Spanish was flowing across social networks and throughout Sanlucar, day in, day out! On Friday, the girls said goodbye to their Spanish friends. They were very sad to be returning to England! It was a very beneficial experience for them, and they took advantage of every opportunity to learn the language.

“I have really enjoyed the opportunity to speak colloquially with Spanish people, and I hope to go back soon. This trip has helped me to improve my Spanish.” Anaïs Tang, Lower Sixth.

“I loved this trip. Everything was much better than I expected: the hotel, the itinerary, the activities, work experience in the school…it was perfect! I cried when I said goodbye to my friends at the school, as they had made me feel so at home. I enjoyed having free time to explore the town and, of course, the food was delicious!” Larissa Kam, Year 11.

“The trip has helped me to have more confidence in myself. I enjoyed teaching the Spanish kids and I have improved my Spanish. All in all, it was great fun.” Molly Reed, Upper Sixth.

Las chicas de Queenswood parecían estrellas de cine! En los colegios hicieron muchísimos amigos con los que se hicieron infinidad de fotos y tuitearon días tras día. El español fluyó por las redes sociales y en el día a día sanluqueno! El viernes las chicas se despidieron de sus amigos españoles y estas estaban muy tristes, no querían volver a Inglaterra! Fue una experiencia muy beneficiosa para ellas y aprovecharon cada momento para aprender el idioma.

“Me ha encantado este viaje. Todo ha sido mucho mejor de lo que esperaba: el hotel, el horario, las actividades, la experiencia laboral en el colegio… Era perfecto! He llorado cuando me he despedido de mis amigos en el colegio ya que me han hecho sentir como en casa. Me gustó tener horas libres para explorar el pueblo y, naturalmente, la comida era deliciosa!” Larissa Kam, Year 11.
