Year 10 Enrichment: Sixth Form Experience, Dance Workshops and Go Ape!
Thursday 22 June 2023
Year 10 have spent Enrichment Week getting a taste for Sixth Form life, exploring career options, learning about self-empowerment and unlocking their potential. They’ve also been scrambling through tree tops, dancing with West End stars and mastering stage combat techniques.
We welcomed FIXUP, who ran an absorbing workshop aimed at building self-confidence at GCSE; the Globe Players, who performed a superb abridged staging of An Inspector Calls (a set text for GCSE English); and authors Sufiya Ahmed and Kevin Shaw for a Writers’ Workshop.
Pupils enjoyed a day in the Bellman Sixth Form Centre, dressed in business attire, during which they sampled some of the subjects on offer at A-Level and conducted a careers treasure hunt.
They also spent a morning with professionals from the performing arts industry. Chris Janes (who has worked with the BBC and RSC) led a stage-fighting workshop, while Ben Rutter, a swing dancer in the West End production of Moulin Rouge, taught a highly intricate routine in the Clarissa Farr Theatre.
They rounded off the week with a trip to Go Ape! in Alexandra Palace.
NADIYA M-K WRITES:
On Wednesday of Enrichment Week, we had a fun morning of dance workshops. One workshop was led by Ben Rutter, who is a swing dancer from the musical Moulin Rouge. He taught us a section from the song ‘Shut Up and Raise Your Glass’ which involved a lot of fast paced movements. Afterwards, we enjoyed a Q and A session about how he managed to enter the entertainment industry, which really opened our eyes to how cut-throat it was. Ben was an amazing teacher due to having experience and we enjoyed the movements and partner work. Overall an amazing experience!
