Year 7 Enrichment Week Activities: Juliette H

Friday 21 June 2024

There were a range of activities we did in the Norman Conquest , all of them were fun! Firstly, in the morning , we had a rotation of training with a sword , axe practice and bow and arrow practice. In the sword practice we had to be loud and we learned how to slash and thrust the sword in different ways. In the axe activity we had to throw an axe at a target, accuracy and skill was key. Just like in the axe practice, in the bow and arrow practice accuracy and skill was also important. We learned about the armour and weapons that were used in the Battle of Hastings and we were even given the opportunity to try on or hold some of the equipment that was brought to Queenswood. After this, we constructed a castle using boxes and our goal was to make it as sturdy as possible. We then tried to destroy the other team’s castle using a medieval catapult  to launch balls. There was a spotter, the person who made sure the angle of the catapult was accurate, a gunner, the person that will launch the ball, and the Captain, who makes sure that it is safe and controlled. Finally, we put all this training into action when we reenacted the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Of course the Normans won this battle. Overall, I enjoyed the Norman Conquest day, it was an action-packed day at Queenswood and it was a lovely experience.

The Tate modern was very enjoyable and fascinating. On this trip, we visited the 2nd and 4th floor of the Tate Modern and we walked down the spiral staircase. We first entered into the Turbine Hall, the height of the ceiling was very tall and the architecture was impressive. Then, we started our experience by looking at the art on the second floor. I quite liked the sculpture called ‘Cadeau’ by Man Ray. It was an iron with nails in it and I found it interesting because it posed questions: Was it an iron if it could not flatten anything? Or was it a nail if it could not make a hole in anything? I found it incredible that an artist could create questions even if there were no words to be read. We visited the fourth floor and I really liked the room with a radio tower called ‘Babel’ by Cildo Meireles. The height was spectacular and it was a grand piece of work. We went down the spiral staircase and put a wish on the wishing tree. I enjoyed the experience very much!

In the STEM activity we made bath bombs and advertised our bath bombs in groups. We made the bath bombs from bicarbonate of soda , citric acid and starch . Then we added sunflower oil and water into these dry ingredients. We could also add an essence of our choice and a few leaves or flowers of some herbal plants. Some of my peers even put food colouring in the bath bomb!  I think that this activity is exciting and fun, it was simple, I enjoyed working as a pair and the product had a lovely appearance and scent. Once we had made our final product, we made an advertisement starring our hand made bath bombs. I enjoyed going outside, filming and showing our short 60 seconds advertisement to our class. The STEM activity required good teamwork, resilience, focus and creativity. Great fun!
